FIRST TIME FOR
EVERYTHING...
First time's of anything is always a trip...
For my first Live PA gig, I vividly remember the anxiety
I felt days before the gig itself.
I had no idea how a live electronica gig went so I didn't
know what to do. I bugged people who had experience and
aksed them how to do it. I even posted questions on internet
groups asking what to do and how to do it... to my dismay,
everyone had the same answer... "It's up to you!"
So I ended up just listening to them and did what was "up
to me!" Luckily, it turned out great!
The gig was held in Sanctum in Intramuros. The gig was
another leg of the Recitals of electronic artists. I really
couldn't remember the exact line up but I think those who
played were me, wolfmann, Clone, Rubber Inc, and Moon Fear
Moon.
Since it was my first time, I really came unprepared! I
came unprepared when it came to the set up process... I
didn't have cables, an AVR, etc... I practically borrowed
from the veteran players and that was a learning process
for me.
We were given I think 20-30 mins each to do our set and
since it was my first time, I came only with one song so
I played one whole track for that long! come to think of
it, how did I do that?! hahahaha I must've went on and on
with just one song for so long! heheheh
Anyway....
The gig went well and luckily got the other artists dig
the music I played. It was just quite weird doing a dance
track in a sit down place hehehe But it was all good. I
had fun and went home with a smile.

I happened to find the original post I made right after
my first gig. I was so excited with how it went I wrote
a detailed story about it. Here it is...
These are my notes to be shared with you guys... This really
goes into the details so the ones who weren't able to go
can imagine how it went.
I'm still up still feeling happy and content with the way
things went tonight at the electronica manila gig held at
Sanctum.
PREPARATION
From the time Noel mentioned live PA, there was something
like a thorn in my head keeping me a bit uptight about playing
live since i've never done it and the answer when i ask
about it is "it's really up to you." It's true.
But i had no exprience right? So i didn't know what was
up to me to begin with hehe
Monday came, 2 days before the gig and i managed to start
on one track but i really wasn't satisfied with it so i
slept on it. Tuesday came and i tried to work on a track
(coz now i'm goin crazy coz i only had a day left) and luckily,
i was able to create a track (THANK GOD!)
I really had difficulties coz:
1. I found it different to play a live pa song against
one that i already have and just play around with the loops
so i had to make one made especially for the live gig.
2. I was having an identity crisis whether or not i'll do
breaks, downtempo, techno, etc in the end, i ended up with
a 4/4 pounding beats track which I was hesitant to play
at first (coz i'm aware) that there are mixed emotions when
it comes to people making dancefloor types of tracks. But
i think since i really dig techno, i pushed it.
Of course when i was choosing what type, i had a little
help from underworld, eat static, hybrid, BT and some of
the people i listen to coz i had to listen a bit.
ACTUAL GIG
Got there at 8 coz the set up time was scheduled at 6 but
when i got there, sanctum was still closed so i had to kill
time at cafeo near sanctum. Good thing Lionel (acid42) also
came early so he was able to join us.
Got back at around 9 and the guys were already there setting
up and doing their soundcheck... fast forward... Lionel
became our host for the night plugging our group as much
as possible to the audience so they can check us out.
Lionel (ACID 42)started the night with his prepared song
made out of patterns prepared for the gig using Reason rewired
with rebirth. his track was also pumping (good thing) but
it was more on breaks and it came into full swing after
his ambient intro.
Next was me (SILVERFILTER) I played a dance track that was
pretty much out of place coz it was a sit-down venue...
that's why i said good thing acid42 did a pumping track
also... I used an MC307 plus 2
fx boxes: kaoss pad and a pioneer efx500.
After me was Chuck (CHROMA) playing Dreambreaks (great track!)
HIS RIG WAS BIG compared to ours! triggering samples in
his a3000 sampler using his sequential (?), filtering and
doing nasty stuff
along with his new kawai sequencer. though we really wanted
him to play using the TB303 also hehe
After him we had Noel and Malek (RUBBER INC) with a song
entitled "You." The concept was really nice and
interactive. they placed mics around the venue and they
sampled in realtime using the voices of people, sounds inside
the place and editing them in
realtime and tweaking. They used Ableton live controlled
by a kenton control freak and oxygen plus the Nord modular
which is a pretty nasty synth if you don't know how to operate
it (like me!)
John (MOON FEAR MOON) closed the night with his untitled
track using Reason and he uses it damn well. He had multiple
songs open and
opening files while playing... cool.
the night ended well and the people went home happy. As
rubber inc commented, it really went smoothly without any
technical difficulty unlike other gigs they played. tonights
gig was really something and we're all excited for the next
one... When? NOV
22 at Big sky mind. So whoever wants to play, post away!
Thanks goes to wolfmann for supporting and watching us.
sayang di nakadating yung iba.
I'm really glad it went well. It was my first time to do
it live and i'm pretty happy : )
As you can see, we're progressing and it'll be a great
one.
more power.
